Gender inequality has been a widespread issue in society all the time. In ancient times, the lower status of women is taken for granted. By contrast, women in today’s society are more self-reliant. There are still some people keep the old concept about women. They believe that men are always superior to women, but that’s only a small part. From my perspective, people are a little too sensitive about women’s rights these days. Some decisions made by women themselves are magnified into serious social problems about gender inequality in their eyes. The objectification of women is one of that problems.
For example, this year there was a celebrity in China go to find a service for surrogacy. When this matter was exposed, the celebrity was quickly cursed by netizens. That is because there are illegal in China to find the surrogacy service. Moreover, the netizens and people thought this such behavior by a celebrity is a manifestation of objectification of women. (The following part of the article is my personal opinion)
It seems to me that this perception is ridiculous. There is no doubt that surrogacy is illegal in China, but that should not be a label for women being objectified. In foreign countries, surrogacy is a job. It’s just a different way of working than what people think is normal. People work mostly with their heads in the office, so can we say that the brick-lifter’s job outside is objectified? Obviously not. The same is true with surrogacy, women just make their choice for better material life. There is no argument that a celebrity did something illegal in the country is a wrong decision. However, I think we all need to be a little more objective about this — about the objectification and gender inequality of women. Women have the right to make their choices, and respecting their choices is a kind of respect for women. Respect is the most basic embodiment of equality. We hope that Chinese netizens would not mix the concept of gender equality in the future.
